Give ChatGPT YouTube video access

Written by the VidWords Team · · Updated · Report a correction

ChatGPT cannot open a YouTube link. Add VidWords as a connector and it can read the video — what was said, what was on screen — and cite the exact moment it got each answer from.

The short answer

  1. In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins, select the + button, then Add custom MCP server.
  2. Name it VidWords and, under Connection, set the Server URL to https://vidwords.com/mcp.
  3. Choose OAuth for authentication, review the risk warning, and select Create as a plugin.
  4. ChatGPT sends you to VidWords to sign in or create a free account. If your address needs confirmation, use the link in your inbox or the 6-digit code in the VidWords banner. You can resend the email there. Gmail and Google Workspace sign-ins are already verified.
  5. Return to the VidWords consent screen and approve the connection. If the flow expired while you checked your email, start the connection again in ChatGPT.
  6. Find the new plugin in your personal plugins (or the workspace you created it in) and install it — a plugin cannot be used in a chat until it is installed.

There is no API key to find and nothing to paste. Do this on chatgpt.com rather than in a mobile app, and note that on a workspace account the admin's permissions decide whether custom MCP servers are allowed at all.

Using it in a chat

In the prompt box, type @ and select VidWords, then paste the video link and ask the question you actually have. When VidWords adds a tool or a card, refresh the plugin from the same place. Two habits make the answers better:

It also works across many videos at once: give it a channel, or a list of links, and ask which of them discuss something.

Why ChatGPT needs this at all

A YouTube link is a page that loads a player; there is no text behind it for a model to read, so ChatGPT either declines or answers from what it remembers about the video — which is how confident, wrong summaries happen. Why ChatGPT can't watch YouTube videos goes through it in detail. A connector fixes it properly: ChatGPT calls a tool, the tool reads the video, and every answer points back at a moment you can check.

Reading what is on the screen

Captions miss everything that is only shown — slides, charts, code, the result of a demo. analyze_video reads the frames as well as the speech, and ask_video answers against that analysis with every citation checked against a recorded frame or transcript segment; anything that cannot be matched is dropped rather than guessed at. Ask for a price first and it quotes one without spending anything.

No VidWords card in the chat? Refresh the plugin

VidWords shows some results as a card: a transcript you can scroll, with every timestamp opening YouTube at that second, and a video analysis with its frames. If ChatGPT answers in plain text and the card never appears, your connection is using an old copy of VidWords' tools.

ChatGPT saves VidWords' list of tools when you add the plugin, and keeps using that copy until you refresh it. A card added after that date stays hidden for you, even though it works for everyone who connected later. VidWords cannot update that copy for you. Instead, when you use a tool whose card your copy is missing, VidWords asks ChatGPT to tell you how to fix it.

  1. In a web browser, open chatgpt.com/plugins. Use a browser rather than the iPhone or Android app.
  2. Open VidWords and select Refresh.
  3. Start a new chat and ask again.

One refresh covers every card VidWords has today, and it belongs to your ChatGPT account, so the cards then appear in the ChatGPT phone apps as well. If VidWords adds another card later, ChatGPT will tell you the same way.

If you cannot find Refresh, remove VidWords and add it again with the steps at the top of this page. Your VidWords account, library and balance are not affected, because they belong to your VidWords account rather than to the plugin.
