How to get a transcript from a YouTube Short

YouTube Shorts are fast-paced vertical clips of up to three minutes, but extracting their text is surprisingly difficult. Here is how to find the hidden transcript button on mobile and desktop, or extract the full text in one click.

Shorts contain some of the highest-density advice, quotes, news summaries, and product tips on YouTube. But unlike standard videos, the YouTube Shorts interface is stripped down to maximize swipe engagement. There is no obvious "Show transcript" button beneath the video, and copying spoken words by hand from a fast-talking creator is frustrating.

Whether you need to quote a creator, repurpose a clip into a written post, or summarize a batch of vertical videos with AI, here is how to get the exact transcript from any YouTube Short.

The 10-second method: Paste into VidWords

1. Copy the Short link from YouTube (for example, https://www.youtube.com/shorts/dQw4w9WgXcQ or from the Share button).
2. Paste the link into the box on the VidWords homepage.
3. Click Get transcript free.
4. Read the full text with timestamps, switch caption tracks, or export as TXT, SRT, VTT, CSV, or JSON.

Method 2: The Desktop URL conversion trick

If you are on a desktop browser and want to use YouTube's native viewer, you can convert the Short URL into a standard video URL:

1. Look at your browser address bar when watching a Short: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID
2. Replace /shorts/ with /watch?v= so the URL becomes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID
3. Press Enter. YouTube will load the Short inside the classic desktop video player.
4. Click the ... More button in the video description and select Show transcript.

This trick bypasses the vertical Shorts reel player and gives you access to the standard desktop sidebar transcript panel.

Method 3: Finding transcripts in the YouTube mobile app

On iOS and Android, YouTube does support transcripts for Shorts, but the button is buried:

1. Open the Short in the YouTube mobile app.
2. Tap the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner or bottom right action bar.
3. Tap Description from the popup menu.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the description box. If captions exist, you will see a button labeled Show transcript.
5. Tap it to open the timestamped caption drawer.

Note: You cannot easily copy all text at once from the mobile app drawer. If you need the full text for notes or LLMs, copying the link and using VidWords is much faster.

Do all YouTube Shorts have transcripts?

Most Shorts have transcripts, but there are two main exceptions:

• Music-only Shorts: If a Short consists only of background music or sound effects with no spoken dialogue, YouTube's speech recognition will not generate a caption track.
• Brand-new uploads: Auto-captions can take between 5 to 30 minutes to generate after a Short is uploaded. If a video was published 2 minutes ago, the transcript may not be ready yet.
